Who inflicts the abuse?
Child abusers are often ordinary people from all types of social, economic, religious and ethnic backgrounds. He or she is rarely a total stranger and is usually a person associated with the child, such as a relative or family acquaintance.
Child Molesters
- 25-30% of child molesters were sexually abused during childhood (Hindman, 1989).
- 33% of child molesters report a history of physical abuse in their childhood (Awad, 1991).
- One out of every 10 men have molested a child (Lewis, 1985).
- 10% of adolescents are offending younger children (Abel, 1986).
- Sexualization through abuse, witnessing abuse or experimenting can create sexual arousal to those events. (Sanford, 1980).
